I really support OREC’s efforts to get Ottawans involved in the transition to renewable energy; it plays an important role in the community through local investment.

Investors are now benefiting from the Co-op’s largest project to date, on the roof of a large storage facility in rural west Ottawa: a 250 kW installation of 1140 panels, which will help power the nearby high school and subdivision.
The storage facility is located within the City limits, near the village of Dunrobin. The 20,000 square-foot building was constructed in the fall of 2012. The Dunrobin solar project was contracted under the first round of Feed-in Tariff contracts, for which the Ontario Power Authority pays a rate of $0.713 per kilowatt hour for the electricity it produces. This rate, in addition to the experience gained with this larger-scale project, makes it a great investment for OREC members and an important milestone in our path to continued growth. OREC owns 50% of the two-million-dollar project in partnership with Windmill Development Group. In 2014, OREC made a short term, $200,000 loan to the project as a placement for funds.
OREC Director Roger Peters is excited about both the project and the partnership. “We wanted to build our capacity to launch larger developments and this was the perfect match,” he explained, “This project will be our biggest energy producer to date, and we’re happy to partner with a local green development company that shares our values and is innovating toward a more resilient Ottawa.”
Project partner and founding partner of the Windmill Development Group, Jeff Westeinde, shares the sentiment. “This is our first partnership with a community-based initiative on a solar project like this,” said Westeinde, “I really support OREC’s efforts to get Ottawans involved in the transition to renewable energy; it plays an important role in the community through local investment, and I think we have similar goals. It’s been a pleasure working on this project with their professional and dedicated team.”
